AWAC - PEERS Prince George ($2,500) To promote development for the expansion of a program for women wanting to exit survival sex work, to build a stronger sense of connection and trust with these women and to establish a solid presence in our community.
Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Prince George ($2,500) To hire a contract person working with staff to author a new policy and procedures manual to improve efficiency in our organization and lend more substance to our new five year plan.
BC Schizophrenia Society ($2,500) To update/create a website and e-newsletter, newsletter, brochure, public display board and signage as part of a social marketing plan aimed at improving the quality of life of the people we serve.
Canadian Red Cross Society, Northern BC and Yukon Region ($1,430) To create a medical demonstration area to show clients how to install and use needed equipment correctly and safely before doing so on their own.
Carrier Sekani Family Services Society ($2,474.79) To promote and draw attention and awareness to the Highway of Tears initiative via three screenings of NFB film "Finding Dawn" (two public viewings and one for social services agencies). Screenings will be accompanied by presentation / discussion by the filmmaker.
Central Interior Regional Arts Council ($2,500) In early 2007, BC Cultural Alliance North (BC Canada) will be launched to advocate for a cooperative, collaborative relationship among partners, members, individuals and interests in the cultural community. This is to promote and market arts, culture and heritage to residents and visitors who venture north of Cache Creek
Central Interior Native Health Society ($2,500) To produce drawings to be used to 'shop' for funding partners to build a facility to house Positive Living North and Central Interior Native Health in one location.
Cerebral Palsy Association of PG & District ($2,500) To provide an opportunity for special needs children to participate in therapeutic music lessons designed to promote learning opportunities. (Five separate groups of children; sixteen lessons each over a four-month period).
Community Arts Council of PG and District (Black Society) ($1,550) This grant will support programs including family crafts day, African games, traditional African cooking, youth workshops, Caribbean dance lessons, drumming and costume making. Activities occur four or five times per season and are open to all youth and families.
Community Arts Council of PG & District (Prince George Potter's Guild) ($2,500) This grant will assist the contribution to replace the 34-year-old gas-fired kiln with a safer and more efficient model.
Emmaus House Society ($2,500) To build a gazebo for visitors, volunteers, staff and patrons to protect them from the elements, while they enjoy the outdoors.
Fraser Basin Council (Rivers Day) ($1,000) To celebrate and educate the public about living and working on the rivers of BC by providing a one-day celebration on the last Sunday of September.

Northern BC Friends of Children ($2,500) To create an interactive web site that would include a description of illnesses and diseases that our society services.
Prince George Hospice Society ($2,500) To promote education about hospice care, death, dying and grief to ameliorate the situation where 75% of our population dies in hospital without adequate support and at great expense.
Prince George Montessori Education Society ($2,500) To assist in replacement of the adventure playground at Highland School for the use of the school and surrounding community.
Prince George Public Library ($2,500) To enable a one-year partnership with CNC and UNBC to digitize early PG newspapers for use by the public, students, genealogists, and researchers.

Grants Awarded 2006
Bel Canto Choirs Association of Prince George ($1,550) This grant will support rehearsal, workshop and performance opportunities for the youth choir. Through their creative work, the choir works to promote a global sense of awareness and promotes development of tolerance and diversity. Choir members gain experience in building community, co-operation and teamwork through creative expression.
Central British Columbia Railway and Forest Industry Museum Society ($2,500) This grant supports installation of permanent signage at the museum site. Fifty-five signs explaining the history of the artifacts in the museum's collection will make possible a heightened appreciation for visitors taking self-directed tours. The amount covers printing and mounting the information for public access.
Community Arts Council of Prince George & District ($2,000) The grant is offered in support of a series of cultural workshops respecting Afro-Caribbean dance, drumming and percussion, folk singing, carnival costume-making, spoken word art forms and theatre.
Prince George Conservatory of Music ($1,500) The conservatory wishes to provide instruments for young students to rent at a nominal fee. This grant will go towards purchase of one half-sized cello and one three quarter-sized cello. Beyond providing instruments to students, it is expected that making the instruments available will assist formation of student quartets, junior student orchestras and eventually skill development to that required in community orchestras.
The Canadian National Institute for the Blind ($2,500) This grant supports the CNIB's development of a computer and technology training program and kitchen facility. Workshops will be offered to provide training and rehabilitation services for blind, deaf-blind and visually impaired clients towards self-sufficiency in the kitchen and in accessing information from computerized sources.
Junior Achievement of British Columbia, Prince George Region ($2,500) To promote development of entrepreneurial and financial knowledge, the JABC is funded for the purpose of delivering five business education programs to Prince George students in Grades 5 through 12. The funds are required to cover the cost of purchasing program materials.
The Prince George Dyslexic Support Society ($2,500) Through the Learning Difficulties Centre of BC, the Dyslexic Support Society will teach parents skills to assist children with learning mathematics and English. The program includes study skills for preparing to write examinations as well as alternative methods for learning.
Cerebral Palsy Association of Prince George & District ($1,500) This grant will produce a dramatic transformation in the playground at the child Development Centre. What is now a playground surfaced in gravel will be transformed into a much more child-friendly space. The plan is to create a park-like setting with trees, shrubs, flowers and grass where they can play and learn.
RSBC Rivershed Society of BC($1,000) This grant celebrates British Columbia's rivers through support to the Prince George Rivers Day Committee, hosts of the BC Rivers Day Music Festival at Fort George Park in late September. By celebrating the area's rivers and streams, the Committee raises awareness of our precious water resources.
British Columbia Schizophrenia Society, Prince George Branch ($2,500) Given in support of the ACE in Stitches Project this money will offer skill development and self-sufficiency along with improved self-esteem for those living with mental illness. The program teaches basic sewing skills applicable to becoming self-sufficient or for production of marketable items.
Handy Circle Promotions Society ($2,500) The grant funds a one-day public forum concerning delivery of health care for persons with disabilities. Those attending will hear experts speak about service availability now and in the future and have opportunities to share their experiences. The goal is to prepare recommendations for consideration by health authorities.
Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada BC Division ($2,500) These funds are intended for purchase of equipment provided to people with MS allowing independent living and enhanced mobility in daily living. Priority is given to those without financial resources to purchase equipment. The society also repairs and maintains equipment in its care.
Prince George Cantata Singers ($2,500) Together with other instrumental and choral groups, the Cantata Singers plan concerts four times a year to benefit patients through concerts at PGRH and residential facilities. This grant will support their continued offerings of artistic therapy.
The University of Northern British Columbia ($2,000) Funds will be applied towards mounting a study about prevalence of overweight and obese children in School District 57. The study will concentrate on identifying risk factors in development of type 2 diabetes in the child population. Information from the study will be used in devising future prevention strategies.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince George ($750) The agency requires funds for capacity building among its new staff and Board. The goal is to acquire resources to support strategic planning and training to optimize the organization's operations in preparation for substantial growth in the numbers of children served.
Family YMCA of Prince George ($2,500) These funds will support the YAP Friends Janitorial Project a program for Youth Around Prince which provides income, work experience and transfer of employability skills to youth at risk. Funds will be applied to honoraria for workers.
Northern Family Health Society ($2,500) This project funds a support group for young adults about fetal alcohol syndrome. The goal is to promote healthy lifestyle choices among people aged 15 to 25 with focus on personal growth and an expectation of a positive future.
Prince George Native Friendship Centre ($2,030) Six partner agencies are combining to offer an active parenting project. This is a parenting education program for parents of children up to 18 years old. Participants will be encouraged to learn skills for preventing family problems.
National Sports Trust Fund, BC Branch ($1,000) This grant will be used to raise awareness of opportunities to participate in national level athletics. The funds will be applied towards equipment purchase for the Inner City Boxing group.
City of Prince George ($2,500) In partnership with the Prince George Tennis Club, the city provides opportunities for youth, families, adults and seniors to come out and learn tennis. The grant will be applied to making the clubhouse accessible for wheelchair athletes.

Theatre North West $1200 to allow the purchase of fifteen sheets of plexiglas for set construction. An investment that will be reused for several years.
Prince George Black History Society $1000 towards a two day youth workshop in April 2005. The workshop focused on traditional Black arts to strengthen the community and youth development.
Prince George Conservatory of Music $700 to purchase two guitars for the School of Rock program.
Huble Homestead/Giscome Portage Heritage Society $1500 towards the construction of a traditional First Nations fishing and hunting camp as a living history interpretive site.
Roots of Empathy (School District 57) $1000 to help continue and expand the Roots of Empathy Program in School District 57.
BC Epilepsy Society
$2000 to help defray costs of training workshops in
School District 57 for teachers and other school staff to help them understand
both the physical and psychosocial needs of a child living with
seizures.
This grant was made possible through the Vancouver
Foundation LEAD Program.
Gateway Parent Support Group $2500 to enable the group to continue to make the Gateway area more family friendly. Because the group is private, they do not receive government funding for projects such as this, and the grant is especially appreciated.
David Douglas Botanical Garden Society
$2500 will see some of the irrigation and other necessary
infrastructure developed in the entry courtyard at the David Douglas Botanical
Garden.

BC Schizophrenia Society Activity Centre for Empowerment $2500 to aid the ACE Community Blooms project with patio improvements that offer an attractive and soothing environment that all members of our community.
Prince George Hospice Society (Rainbows) $2500 to allow for more flexibility to purchase a variety of supplies so that the children will have more selection in the crafts they do. While doing crafts the children become relaxed and talk more freely when their hands are busy.
Canadian Red Cross - BC and Yukon $2310 to purchase tools and parts required to maintain the Red Cross medical equipment inventory. This contribution enables the Red Cross to build capacity within the organization to manage all aspects of its medical equipment loan service.

$1500 to purchase resource material for a support group
for parents of teenagers with depression.

Millennium Scholarship Endowment Fund $3500 funds three scholarships for the School District: $2000 for the Prince of Wales Scholarship, $1000 for the Don Thorlakson Scholarship and $500 for a new additional scholarship.
The College of New Caledonia Endowment Fund $2800 fund includes a variety of smaller funds for scholarships including: the Bea Dezell Scholarship, the Carrie and Carl Rustad Scholarship, the J. Harold Bogle Memorial Scholarship, the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association Scholarship and others.

CNIB - Northern BC & Yukon $1800 to support the program Vision Odyssey, a new program that helps individuals and their families adjust to vision loss and blindness. This grant was possible through the Vancouver Foundation LEAD Program.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) $2000 for a program that assists in preventing substance abuse and reducing violence among school age children. This is a cooperative effort by the community, schools and the police.
Elder Citizen Recreation Association
$1800 for an electronic cable for the centre to
contribute to the well being of our community's senior citizens through
entertainment, meetings and seminars.

Prince George Regional Art Gallery $2500 for equipment and supplies for the 3rd Avenue Banners Project. This project is a collaborative project with the Downtown Business Improvement Association, the City of PG and School District No 57. Roots of Empathy/School District No 57 $1500 for a pilot project to teach empathy in the school district and thus diminishing aggression. Messages of social inclusion and valuing diversity are foremost. This grant is possible through the Vancouver Foundation LEAD Program.
Northern BC Council on Substance Abuse $900 for the purpose of designing the Needs Assessment Tool to research the perception and needs of employers, employees and community groups regarding substance abuse issues in the workplace.
College of Science and Management - UNBC $2737 for quality management resources, books and technical resources for business and other members of the Prince George community to be housed in the Geoffrey Weller Library at UNBC. This grant has been made possible by a special flow through fund provided by the Quality Council of Prince George.

The Canadian Mental Health Association $1000 LEAD funds to assist with the purchase of a badly needed new fifteen passenger van used to transport disabled individuals to various venues providing treatment, recreational activities and/or job and training initiatives.
David Douglas Botanical Garden Society $2000 to assist in the establishment of the Botanical Gardens at the University of Northern British Columbia. These funds will be used to relocate eight Swiss Stone Pine Trees from the old Agriculture Canada Experimental Farm to the Entry Plaza at the University.
Elder Citizen Recreation Association $750 to purchase and establish a new sound system and portable casing used by the Drama Club, Rainbow Singers and the centre itself.
Northern Family Health Society $1000 LEAD funds to review, revise and update the Society's Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disease community awareness signage.
Prince George Arts and Cultural Coalition $2000 LEAD funds to be used in a unique union of four of the community's tourism destination sites; Huble Homestead, The Exploration Place, The Two Rivers Art Gallery and The Railway & Forestry Museum. These funds will be used to provide a comprehensive training and orientation package for their summertime staff.
Prince George Hospice Society $1750 LEAD funds which will be used to establish the Rainbow Bereavement Program for children at the Centre.
Prince George LifeTime Networks Society $2500 LEAD funds will assist this organization which addresses issues of support for disabled individuals and supporting families and relatives who are going older or are no longer in a position to provide immediate aid, to increase the community's awareness of the program and its services.
Prince George Regional Art Gallery Association $2000 is provided to assist in the development and establishment of a unique pilot art program that would be conducted for hospitalized children. $1000 of these funds are being made available under the advice of the Youth Advisory Committee and its Helping Youth Progress Endowment.
Prince George Symphony Orchestra Society $1500 is awarded to assist in the development of a truly community wide Children Choir with up to 200 voices and which will culminate in the presentation of Benjamin Britten's Noyes Fludde.
Project Friendship Society $1000 will be used to establish a compendium of biographical sketches celebrating citizens of Prince George who have made a difference.
The Prince George Railway and Forestry Museum $1000 will be used to create a travelling museum exhibit that includes a set of greeting cards with award winning exhibition images made available by Moira McNeil.

Fraser Fort George Museum Society $1500 to assist in the establishment of a children's interactive section in the museum.
Northern BC Friends of Children Society $2500 to design, develop and deliver a community awareness of their program throughout the northern region.
Northern John Howard Society $600 to purchase computer software designed to establish a visual and audio bulletin board for their clientele.
Prince George Alzheimers Society $2500 to design and produce sets of greeting cards comprised of pictures taken by Colin Flick during his 2000 climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. This will assist the organization to address financial issues and begin a campaign toward less dependency on grants.
Prince George Brain Injured Group Society $2500 to purchase a lap top computer to improve the organization's ability to make presentations which address issues of safety and prevention to various agencies, schools and sports groups.
Prince George Dyslexic Support Society $2000 to equip a resource centre for the organization's research and teaching personnel.
Prince George Native Friendship Centre $1862 to support a pilot program designed to encourage young people to seek alternative life styles to living and working on the streets.
Prince George Oral History Group $1750 to produce copies of reformatted recordings by Robert Service as taken from the historical radio tapes of the Jack Carbutt Collection. This will assist the organization begin a campaign towards less dependency on grants.
Streets Spirits Theatre Company $2500 to mount six thematic theatrical presentations for schools and special interest groups, addressing issues faced by youth today such as violence, single parenting, independent living, dealing with substance abuse, coping with unemployment and living on limited resources.

VLA Youth Centre, Sponsored by Carrier Sekani Tribal Council $2000 to provide Leadership Skills training for 6 8 youth participants who will also be directly involved in organizing the proposed Elders Conference to be conducted in February/March 2001.
Prince George Figure Skating Club/Spruce City Skating Club 500 to create a manual of the best practices relating to the planning, organizing and implementation of a Championship Figure Skating competition, to be used by various associated organizations.
Prince George Dog Sled Club $1800 to upgrade the Tabor Mountain Trails system by upgrading the parking lot, establishing an alternative trail start point, and to establishing an information kiosk. All of activities will contribute toward the restoration of the Tabor Trails for year round recreational use.
Huble Homestead/Giscome Portage Heritage Society $2000 to develop educational kits for School District #57 and in particular to design and develop new period costumes to be used on site.
Northern BC Friends of Children $2400 to increase Northern British Columbia medical professionals awareness of the Society's support systems providing assistance and aid to families with children facing emergency medical needs. This project would include the hiring of part time staff who would be involved in the development and distribution of information bulletins and brochures to the northern area doctors, medical centres and other related support resources.
Prince George Council of Seniors 2500 to initiate the design of a compendium of programs and services available to seniors throughout the Northern Interior Regional Health Board area. These funds will be used to hire temporary staff, to survey the potential users of such a compendium as to its potential content, and to seek out additional funding in order for the project to proceed to its next phase.
Women's Wellness Information Centre $2200 to create and develop a series of Health Promotion activities. The series will address specific health issues of women, will identify the resources available to address the issues and will increase the community's awareness of the Women's Wellness Information Centre.
Northern Interior Regional Health Board - Speech Therapy Unit $680 to assist in the development and delivery of a training program designed to assist parents to become aware of, and skilled in helping children who have been identified as high risk for communication delay.

Autism BC $500 to assemble a teachers' information kit to be made available to the schools.
D.A.R.E.Prince George (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) $2500 to train additional RCMP Officers as presenters at the Junior High School level. The "Youth Advisory Committee" members strongly recommended supporting the program. It has also been recommended that the D.A.R.E. program be expanded in the schools.
Elder Citizens Recreation Association Drama Club $1200 used to purchase a lighting system.
Northern Family Health Society-Healthiest Babies Possible This organization has taken a lead role in the province in researching and studying the effect and impact of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The award of $2000 will go towards their Communicating The Solution and the results of their findings. The Vancouver Foundation along with a number of other organizations have taken a great deal of interest in this project and will be contributing expertise, services and funds.
Prince George Council of Seniors awarded $2000 to upgrade equipment, purchase and install 2 internet connections in their Seniors' Activity Centre. Now the connections will be available along with training to use the equipment and access the internet. This group offers basic computer training to seniors using volunteer instructors from the community.
Prince George Public Library awarded $750 to assist in the publication of a unique catalogue that will list local history resources. The publication will be titled Past Perfect Prince George History and How To Find It. The publication is dedicated to the memory of Keith Gordon.
Prince George Oral History Group awarded $750 to continue their recording of local historical figures.
Community Planning Council awarded $2000, half of which came from the Community Foundation and the remainder from the Foundation's allocation to the H.Y.P.E. (Youth) Committee. Funds being used to develop a presentation package as part of the feasibility study for the establishment of a Boards, Bikes and Blades Park.

BC Schizophrenic Society This organization received a grant of $1000 to prepare and present a puppet theatre to school classes to increase awareness of schizophrenia, its symptoms, and the treatments available.
